Innerhalb der 'Schwesterkünste', von denen Brecht sprach, hat sich das Bühnenbild in letzter Zeit einen souveränen Schauwert erarbeitet und nach allen Seiten geöffnet. Unabhängig davon, ob es an experimentelle Spielideen gebunden ist oder an Inszenierungen, die die Rekonstruktion realer und fiktionaler Welten fokussieren, ob sie von Minimal Art, Konzeptkunst oder Fluxus beeinflusst sind, beeindrucken die Bühnenbilder der Gegenwart durch ein intensives Formbewusstsein und die Berücksichtigung der Zuschauerperspektive bei ihrer Raumwahrnehmung. Das Arbeitsbuch stellt unverwechselbare Positionen zum Bühnenbild im zeitgenössischen Schauspiel vor. In ausführlichen Interviews und mit umfangreichem Fotomaterial werden anschauliche Einblicke in Arbeitsweisen, künstlerische Entwicklungen und Auffassungen ermöglicht. The theatre magazine Theater der Zeit has been following the developments of stage design for some years now in its 'Kunstinserts'. There we asked stage designers about their motivation, their working methods, the way they collaborate with directors, how their artistic practice unfolds in a theatre context. With a heuristic approach eschewing any claim to completeness, we promoted discussion, whether it was to mark a new production or because the artists in question were breaking new ground in the development of theatre. More than anything it is these direct statements from the artists which distinguish this workbook from the 1998 'Bild der Bühne', which presented such in uential artists as Robert Wilson, Achim Freyer, Jürgen Rose, Einar Schleef and Anna Viebrock. In 'Setting the Stage' we have once again brought together seventeen of the most diverse artistic personalities; collectively they demonstrate how artistic considerations - at once purposeful and inevitable - function in the mode of an increas- ingly radical and con dent self-conception of the theatre as gesamtkunstwerk.

Mirka Döring, von 2012 - 2016 Redakteurin bei Theater der Zeit, geboren 1983 in Lüneburg, studierte zunächst Germanistik und Kulturwissenschaft an der Universität Bremen und an der Université des Antilles et de la Guyane. Im Anschluss daran absolvierte sie den Master-Studiengang Dramaturgie für Bühne und audiovisuelle Medien an der Akademie für Darstellende Kunst Baden-Württemberg. Parallel zum Studium zahlreiche Hospitanzen und Assistenzen an den Stadt- und Staatstheatern in Bremen und Stuttgart. Sie lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Mirka Döring was born in Lüneburg in 1983, and studied German and Cultural Studies at the University of Bremen and the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane, Martinique. She subsequently received a Master's in dramaturgy for the stage and audio-visual media at the Academy of Performing Arts Baden-Württemberg. Following numerous traineeships and assisting positions in city and state theatres she has assumed various production dramaturgy roles at the Volksbühne Berlin and the Staatstheater Stuttgart. She has been an editor at the journal Theater der Zeit since 2012. Ute Müller-Tischler, geboren 1959, studierte und promovierte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin im Bereich Kunstwissenschaften und Ästhetik. Kuratiert und publiziert zu Themen aktueller und zeitgenössischer Kunstpraxis, u. a. die Edition Kunstbriefe/Dokumente, Kritiken und Korrespondenzen (1995 bis 2002), internationales Handbuch für kuratorische Praxisformen mit Christoph Tannert (2004), künstlerische Leiterin im Parkhaus, im Kunst- und Medienzentrum, Berlin (1991-2002), im Brandenburgischen Kunstverein Potsdam (2005 - 2007). Sie leitet den Fachbereich Kunst und Kultur in Berlin-Mitte. Autorin und Herausgeberin für Theater der Zeit mit Schwerpunkt Bühnenbild. Sie begründete dort die Reihe 'Künstlerinsert'. Was born in 1959 and graduated in art studies and aesthetics at the Humboldt University, Berlin. She curates and writes on topics of current and contemporary art practice, including 'Men in Black. Handbuch der kuratorischen Praxis' (2004, with Christoph Tannert). Between 1991 and 2002 she was artistic head of the Parkhaus Berlin-Treptow, curator at the Adlershof Art and Media Centre, Berlin, as well as the Brandenburg Art Association, Potsdam. She currently heads the Art and Culture department for the council of the Berlin borough of Mitte. She is also a writer and editor for the Verlag Theater der Zeit, focussing on stage design. She launched the 'Kunstinsert' series for the journal Theater der Zeit.
